JAIPUR: The Rajasthan government, for the first time, is experimenting with scientific ways for maintaining land records in the state.

One of India's iconic tiger reserves is emblematic of its efforts to save the big cat

Preserving India's wild tigers has become a popular cause today. Most people might never see a wild tiger, but they fully support measures to save it. They are aware that, in spite of several challenges, tigers do persist and need help. Poaching, mining, indifferent forest bureaucracies, highways in sanctuaries, and unrestrained consumerism — all pose a threat.

This time it is not merely crying wolf! The Indian Gray Wolf, inhabiting scrub lands and the ravines along the banks of the Central Indian rivers, needs protection. The immediate threat to the Indian wolf ( Canis lupus pallipes ), found along the banks of the Yamuna, Chambal, Banas and Mahi rivers, is the destruction of its habitat due to sand mining, cultivation and levelling of the ravines.

The Rajasthan Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the environmentally significant proposal to develop the Rajiv Gandhi Biosphere Reserve linking about a dozen wildlife sanctuaries and the prestigious Ranthambhore National Park. In what should be considered a milestone in environment protection, the biosphere would facilitate movement of tigers and other wildlife in a corridor and safeguard any species from becoming genetic pools.

‘Broken Tail’ Was Based On A Strayed Cub
Jaipur: In a rare laurel for Ranthambore National Park, a documentary film on a tiger at the park has recently won three awards including that of the ‘best film award’ at a film festival in Jackson Hole, US. The film christened ‘Broken Tail’ is the true story of a tiger in the park which had disappeared but survived in an unprotected hinterland for several months and eventually died after a train hit him.

Kolkata: On her last legs, Machli — often called Ranthambore’s matriarch for presiding over a majestic legacy of over a decade — can still make a tiger-lover crave for her glimpse. But her offsprings in the 400-500 sq km tiger abode in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur district face a genetic threat that could hit the population hard in the long run.

JAIPUR: It was a happy reunion for tigress T-5 and her cubs on Friday morning at the Ranthambore national park. Timely action saved them from death.

Out for photography at the park, state tourism minister Beena Kak on Thursday spotted the three with the help of the powerful camera. "The tigress was restless inside a pond.

Jaipur: Rajasthan minister Ashok Bairwa has come under fire from animal rights activists after he reportedly staged a snake dance at a fair at Sawai Madhopur on September 15.

The Rajasthan Government on Thursday declared 2,381 villages in 10 districts as scarcity-hit following extensive damage to rabi crops caused by frost and cold wave earlier this year. The maximum number of 1,722 such villages are in Jaipur, followed by 249 in Sriganganagar, 178 in Jhalawar, 103 in Tonk, 43 in Nagaur, 29 in Jodhpur, 25 in Sawai Madhopur, 14 in Bikaner, 13 in Sikar and five in Jaisalmer.

The much-maligned Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar district of Rajasthan is going to get back its flagship species soon. Four years after the disappearance of its famous tigers, the reserve is getting ready now for re-introduction of the animal. Much deliberations and some ground level action, including shifting of at least one of the forest villages inside the reserve and improvement in the habitat, have gone into the preparations for the pioneering act, which would have few parallels in the world's conservation history.
