SHILLONG, May 10 – The Central Silk Board (CSB) and State Space Application Centres has taken up a project to extend the silk cultivation area in the State to meet the growing demand of silk in the country thereby provide employment in the rural areas of the State. The current demand for silk is 30,000 ton but the country produces about 23000 ton, according to the CSB. The board is trying to extend the cultivation of silk in non-traditional areas like Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, etc.

SIVASAGAR, Feb 7 – Muga, or the “golden silk”, has always been the pride of Assam. Over the years, muga silk has become a unique part of Assamese culture and tradition. This Assam’s golden silk has also got recognition in the international arena. Recently, it was declared by skin specialists of the world that dresses made of muga or eri, prevent skin diseases.

Silk, a highly priced agricultural commodity, accounts for about 0.2% of the total world production of textile fiber. Since sericulture stands next to agriculture for rural employment in India, it becomes a matter of concern to examine the sericulture production trend over the years and reasons for slow growth. The data for the study period 1980-81 to 2005-06 collected from Annual Reports of Central Silk Board were partitioned in two equal halves, the first 13 years (1980-81 to 1992-93) and next 13 years (1993-94 to 2004-06).

The Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir has said the cocoon production in the state has increased to 1,900 metric tonnes this year and has yielded Rs 11 crore this fiscal.

“With the efforts of the government, the cocoon production of the state has reached 1,900 metric tonnes and the total income earned during this fiscal is Rs 11 crore," Mir said during a workshop on “Bivoltine Sericulture in Jammu and Kashmir”.
