The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken up the case of land-grabbing, diversion of forest land on Patharia Reserve Forest, pushing about 300 families of forest dwellers on the brink of starvation, besides rendering them homeless.

The human rights watchdog of the nation registered the case in the matter as vide no 99/3/10/2012 on a complaint filed by the Barak Human Rights Protection Committee (BHRPC) after it conducted a fact finding study of the situation.

New Delhi A specialised body for promoting sustainable development of the Indian auto sector, dubbed the National Automotive Board, is likely to be set up by April.

"The proposed National Automotive Board (NAB), which is being finalised by the Department of Heavy Industry, is likely to be cleared by the Cabinet in a month," an official said.

Silchar, Feb. 7: The proposal of the Congress-ruled Mizoram government to build a 5km mono rail network across the hill capital town of Aizawl to ease traffic has made considerable headway. The state government has now asked the RITES, Rail India Technical & Economic Services Limited, an engineering and consultancy subsidiary of the Indian Railways, with its headquarters in Lucknow, to prepare a technical as well as economic feasibility report of this mono rail system in Aizawl town.

AGARTALA: The first unit of 726 MW Palatana power project, which was supposed to be commissioned by February next year, will be coming up by May 2012, said Chief Secretary SK Panda here on Wednesday. Panda who held a high level meeting here to review the progress of the mega power project told reporters that the first unit of the project would be put into trial operation by March 31, next year and it would be fully operational by May 15.

Silchar Dec. 18: The Union ministry of shipping and road transport is finalising modalities and financial aspects to upgrade the Barak as part of the national waterways to link south Assam’s traffic with the mainland through Bangladesh. A senior official of the Central Inland Water Transport Corporation in Karimganj town last week said the Barak would soon be included into the national waterways once the modalities were completed.

Silchar, Oct. 18: The Assam public health engineering department plans to set up a Rs 18.78-crore water plant in Silchar to augment the supply of potable water in the town.
The plant at Dhakai Patti will treat the water of the Barak and supply nearly 1.5 million gallons per day through a network of underground pipes.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in a meeting organised at the Congress Bhawan here said that the Barak Valley people will get Rs 1000 crore if the electorate gives the Congress party 15 seats in the forthcoming Assembly election.

Gogoi said that he is aware about the problems of the Barak Valley. For this reason he has requested Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for Rs 1000 crore.
