Several hundred acres of cultivable land in the district loses fertility every year as brick kilns are collecting huge quantities of earth from the topsoil of agricultural lands for making bricks.

Consequently, the affected lands remain uncultivable and fallow for years, affecting overall crop production.

The situation sees a worsening trend due to lack of strong monitoring from the district and upazila administrations.

The field investigations were carried out on sandy loam soil at the research farm, Department of Agricultural Meteorology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during rabi 2006-07 and 2007-08. Wheat is the premier cereal crop during rabi season in Punjab. In 2008-09, it was grown on 35.26 lac tonnes and per hectare yield of 44.62 quintals. Wheat needs cool climate during early part of its growth and warm temperature at this stage is unfavourable for tillering and promotes several diseases.

An experiment was conducted to study the phosphate adsorption-desorption behaviour of some paddy growing soils of Anantnag district of Kashmir. Representative soil samples (0-15 cm) were collected from thirteen locations of district under paddy.

BHUBANESWAR: In a major boost to sustainable agriculture technology for soil management, the Agriculture Department has proposed to establish 20 new soil testing laboratories in the State. There are 11 such labs at present. Separately, the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has also decided to set up another 20 soil testing laboratories in its Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) under the 12th plan.

The growth and plant water relations of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. and E. camaldulensis Dehnh. in relation to soil salinity were studied by transplanting one and half month old seedlings in the pots filled with eight levels of artificially created soil salinity levels.

Infiltration tests were conducted at three locations in the Pooppara Tribal Colony area, Idukki District, Kerala. Physico-chemical analysis of the soil samples shows that the soil type for the selected locations is sandy clay loam and is acidic in nature with low bio-manure.

Rain is the only source of water on the earth and for conserving this precious resource, the base is the land. Shortage of rainfall coupled with its erratic distribution during rainy season causes severe water deficit conditions resulting in various intensities of droughts. Drought varies in different parts of the world depending on the amount and reliability of rainfall received in a particular region. Gulbarga district is one of the drought prone districts of the Karnataka state.

Investigations and experience on truth of natural plant life surrounding us revealed that 1) soil is living, 2) health of cattle influences biodiversity as well as recycling of biomass and 3) quality of water. It is "soul" content of alternate farming.

Fossil fuel combustion and fertilizer application in the United States have substantially altered the nitrogen cycle, with serious effects on climate change. The climate effects can be short-lived, by impacting the chemistry of the atmosphere, or long-lived, by altering ecosystem greenhouse gas fluxes. Here we develop a coherent framework for assessing the climate change impacts of US reactive nitrogen emissions, including oxides of nitrogen, ammonia, and nitrous oxide (N2O).

With a view to improving the fertility of soil after ascertaining the minerals and micronutrients it lacks, the agriculture authorities have issued 16,000 soil health cards to farmers in Sirsa. Samples of soil taken from the fields of 16,000 more farmers have been collected and the authorities hope to issue cards to them by next month.

“The agriculture department has set up a laboratory in the district where the soil is tested for NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) culture,” said the Deputy Commissioner J Ganeshan.
