The Delhi government on Monday decided to continue extending a rebate of `6,000 to each domestic consumer for installing solar water heaters. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting presided over by chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Ms Dikshit said extension of the scheme for one more year will go a long way in saving the environment.

Chandy to launch solar lighting project today

The Department of Prisons is all set to go green with solar lighting systems to be installed in the Central Prison in the city. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the pilot project at the Central Prison at 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

A UNDP/GEF Global Solar Water Heating Project is also under implementation by the Ministry which aims at accelerating the market development of solar water heating and facilitating the installation of 5 million m2 of installed collector area by 2012.The objective of the project is to leverage the Ministry’s National Programme and create markets and widespread demand for solar water heating in different demand sectors especially in the thus far untapped potential areas. So far several studies/ activities have been undertaken which has helped in boosting the market to a large extent.

To promote the use solar energy in the state Rajasthan government has issued orders to use the solar water heating system in the certain categories of buildings. Despite the mandatory provision with strict penalties there are hardly any takers for it, flouting the rules blatantly.

SRINAGAR: The Government has installed solar water heating devices in 69 hospitals of the State and is contemplating to bring more Government buildings under the project.
