New Delhi: There is a difference of opinion on whether there is a decrease in bird species in Delhi; but birdwatchers are unanimous on one count —the total number of birds has come down. Its good news for bird lovers, Haryana's Sultanpur sanctuary is on its way to become a permanent abode for several colourful winged migratory species with the Centre soon notifying the area spread over 143 sq kilometres as a no construction zone.

Whereas, the Sultanpur National Park ( about 15 km from Gurgaon and about 45 km from Delhi) is important and known for aquatic avifauna where about 30,000 birds belonging to about 250 species have been listed in this park during winters and the important birds visiting this park are Pelicans, Herons, Egrets, Storks, Flamingoes, Geese, Ducks, etc.

What comes as welcome news for Sultanpur National Park in Gurgaon, Bhindawas wildlife sanctuary in Jhajjar as well as another national park and seven other sanctuaries, the Central government has issued a draft notification declaring areas around these sites as eco-sensitive zones (ESZs). This would mean all development activity within 5-km radius of these spots will be restricted.
