Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said that hydropower projects, which had already obtained clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment & Forest, should not be barred from other technical clearance just for a mere perceived feelings of some people. CM Bahuguna, speaking at a meeting of National Ganga River Basin Authority chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi asserted that the power projects are very essential for the development of the State and they played pivotal role in improving the economy of the State.

Water security is one of the most important ingredients of the human security as the agricultural and industrial sectors are heavily dependent on water. Externally, it has lead to tensions between India and the neighbouring countries, and given rise to many intra-State conflicts internally.

The people of Assam, and especially those dependent on agriculture, would endure extremely difficult times if mega dams were constructed on rivers in Arunachal Pradesh, which flowed into the State. SHILLONG: "Conservation of forest is more important than mining of uranium," said noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna here on Tuesday.

"For one diamond in the forest, one cannot destroy the whole forest to obtain it," he said metaphorically.
