Accelerating growth in the transport sector, a booming construction industry, and a growing industrial sector are responsible for worsening air pollution in Indian cities. While estimates of health impacts are effective in raising overall concern about air quality, they do not specifically answer the question of what are the sources of air pollution and and what is their contribution. Further uncontrolled growth will lead to more pollution and require large recurring investments to control pollution.

The health department has asked the municipal corporations to ensure proper follow-up of individual malaria or dengue cases that are reported at its health centres. The department has also wanted that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) ensure a double check of any mosquito control measures that are undertaken at the ward level. This includes fogging, spraying of insecticides, collecting smears and examinations and follow-up of fever cases that are reported at the urban health centres.

AHMEDABAD: The high rate of malaria cases in the state is a grim sign of the fight lost out to mosquitoes. Ahmedabad city has recorded 596 malaria cases in the latest weekly disease assessment of the state, the highest and has even overtaken Surat city which has recorded 543. Ahmedabad has the second highest number of falciparum cases in the state. A major reason, according to health practitioners is the relapse of malaria and falciparum cases in patients.

Surat: If all goes well, Surat will be the first city in the state to generate electricity from garbage. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has moved a proposal for generating 12 MW electricity from 600 metric tonne of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Mumbai already has such a project.
