There are 12 "hot spots" in eight States where river water was found to be contaminated. In the first ever report of its kind, the Central Water Commission (CWC) monitored water quality at 371 stations in river systems across the country and identified stretches that need urgent Government action. It found that river water in these "hot-spots" was not fit for drinking purposes, irrigation, outdoor bathing and propagation of wildlife, fisheries.

As part of the efforts for extension of irrigation facilities, the State Government has chalked out a plan for construction of 67 new reservoirs under a multi-purpose project for drought-affected areas in the State. This will bring an additional 1,000 hectare under irrigation apart from developing other facilities.

Burhanpur: Rs 4500 crore Tapti river mega recharge project will be launched in Burhanpur district with the cooperation of Maharashtra government. Three-day Tapti Mahotsava will be held every year with a view to bringing Burhanpur on the world tourism map. These announcements were made by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan while addressing Gharib Sammelan at Burhanpur today.
