GUWAHATI: The Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha has expressed alarm at the fact that the indigenous people of Assam are slowly losing their land rights.

Assam Sanmilita Manasangha working president Matiur Rahman said, “It is the responsibility of the State Government to protect the land rights of the sons of the soil. But unfortunately, this government appears to ignore the issue of protection of the land rights of the indigenous people.

Members of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today held a rally and took out a procession at Tezpur in support of their demand for land settlement rights to the indigenous landless people, repeal of the land swap deed signed by the Indian Government with the Government of Bangladesh and a halt to the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) construction activities.

Dynamics of nitrous oxide (N2O) emission and the relationship of soil properties with N2O emission were studied from the tea ecosystem of North East India situated at north bank plain agroclimatic zone at Tezpur, Assam. The gas samples were collected from the tea bush at weekly intervals from 30 August 2008. Our results shows that N2O fluxes from the tea garden planted with varieties Hilika and TV-23 ranged from 7.51 to 63.30 μg N2O-N m–2 h–1.
