The greening drive in the district under which about 1.64 lakh saplings are to be planted would be executed in three phases, said Collector Jayashree Muralidharan on Tuesday.

Chairing a meeting to review the implementation of the programme , Ms. Muralidharan pointed out that the greening initiative was launched as part of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's birthday celebration.

Power generation from wind mills over the last few days has enabled the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the immense relief of industries in the region.

Industries, particularly ancillaries of BHEL, Tiruchi, hope that the power situation will smoothen in the near future with the onset of windy season and the scope for the State to augment its power position with its share from the Kudankulam nuclear power plant shortly.

Forest department to start preliminary works at Upper Anicut reserve forest

Preliminary works for the establishment of a tropical butterfly conservatory in Srirangam is set to begin soon with funds being granted to the Forest Department for this purpose. The State government has sanctioned Rs. 1.61 crore as first instalment to the Forest Department to carry out a host of works for setting up the conservatory which will come up in the Upper Anicut reserve forest in Srirangam. The funds have been provided from the 13th Finance Commission.

The State government has planned to carry out six projects of inter-linking of rivers in the State at a total cost of Rs. 9,015 crore as part of its efforts to achieve optimal utilisation of water resources.

Stating this while initiating a debate in the Assembly on the demands for grants of the Public Works Department, PWD Minister K.V. Ramalingam explained the rationale behind the formulation of the projects.

Designated officer, 22 food safety officers appointed for district

Traders engaged in food business in the district were oriented to the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 here on Thursday. Chairing the meeting, Collector Jayashree Muralidharan pointed out that the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 had come into force across the country from August 5, 2011 and it was essential that all traders engaged in food business conformed to the provisions of the Act.

Bench directs PWD to file a status report by April 24

A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to forbear the Public Works Department (PWD) and Collectors of Karur, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts from quarrying sand along the stretches of rivers Cauvery and Kollidam.

The Tiruchi District Consumer Movement urged the Centre to allot the entire quantum of power generated in the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) to the State considering the abysmal power scenario in the State.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting to celebrate the International Women's Day, Consumer Day and the memorial day of Muthuvelan, founder of the Movement, held here recently. J.Selvaraj, president, presided over the meet.
