If Maharashtra boasts the country’s largest public transport fleet, it has also earned the dubious distinction of being the top killer on roads last year, causing 3,407 mishaps. What’s worst, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) also recorded the highest increase - of 203 - in road accidents during 2010-11, while Tamil Nadu saw the largest decline — of 172 mishaps — during the same period, according to a review of the performance of State road transport undertakings (SRTUs) by the Union Road & Transport Ministry.

This report focuses on air pollution and traffic accidents as the major adverse impacts on urban transport. It attempts to show the current impact and issues of these two problems. Further it looks into recent challenges by pointing out some common and successful practices adopted in Asian megacities. Finally, in the last section, this report suggests some policy recommendation to manage the challenges in mitigating the adverse impacts of urban transport.

New Delhi: Distancing itself from the traffic mess at Delhi-Gurgaon toll plaza and rise in accidents on the Gurgaon expressway, the National Highways Authority of India has blamed its developer for these problems. In a mammoth 200-page reply submitted in the Delhi high court, NHAI has justified its move to terminate the expressway contract, saying the Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity Ltd’s (DGSCL) mismanagement of traffic has led to accidents, long waiting time for commuters at toll plazas and massive agitations fueled by public dissatisfaction.

India’s phenomenal economic growth over the last decade has been accompanied by a much-needed expansion and improvement in transport and other infrastructure networks. While there are legally mandated assessments of the potential ecological impacts of such infrastructure projects prior to implementation, rarely are there post-implementation assessments of their real ecological impacts.

The Asian Development Bank has established the Sustainable Transport Initiative to align its transport operations with ADB's long-term strategic framework, Strategy 2020. In July 2010, ADB approved the Sustainable Transport Initiative Operational Plan, which identifies road safety as one of the priority areas to be mainstreamed and scaled up in ADB's transport operations.
