SHILLONG: The decision of the state government to replace plastic bags with eco-friendly hand woven bags called “Pla Iew” and “Sla” or leaves has taken a backseat due to want of manufacturers and suppliers. The use of such environment friendly bags/leaves came in the heels of rampant rivers and stream water pollution in the city and the effort of the state government to turn the city into a cent percent “no plastic zone.”

SHILLONG: The State Government has constituted a committee to find an amicable solution to the ongoing controversy over the construction of the four-lane highway along the Umsning stretch.

SHILLONG: In what can be termed as a major sigh of relief for the State Government, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has asserted that the agency can neither cancel the Umiam-Jorabat four-laning project nor it can change the alignment of the project.

A senior NHAI official involved with the project on Thursday allayed all fears that the project might be cancelled by NHAI within November this year if the State Government delays the handing over of Umsning Bypass land for the project.

Food items are being packed in leaves called “Sla” as they are clean and environment-friendly.

Shillong, March 22: A CAG report has rapped the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited for not initiating any steps to protect the Umiam reservoir which feeds five downstream hydropower plants of the corporation.

The reservoir covers an area of 10 square km and serves as a recreational spot for tourists with amenities for boating and angling.

In addition, the reservoir supplies drinking water

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is planning to replace the 40-year-old machinery in use in Stage-II of the Umiam Hydel Power Project with the latest machinery.

According to official sources here on Tuesday, a Japanese-based firm has been awarded the contract for procuring and fitting the new machineries.
