Installing rainwater harvesting (RWH) system in buildings seems to be just another Government order for people in the City, instead of being a social responsibility. Although the initial deadline (December 31, 2011) to install the RWH systems evoked quick response from residents, with many booking filters with dealers/plumbers, it fizzled out once the deadline was extended to March 31, 2012.

To take stock of water bodies in the city, including ponds that have been filled in and encroached upon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is planning to map them.

Besides, all old buildings with above built-up area of more than 2,400 sq ft should adopt the technique within the specified time.

A final decision on extending the deadline for installation of rainwater harvesting structures in the City buildings is expected in the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
