Ahmedabad: Tribal districts, which were the torch-bearers for the girl child in Gujarat, boasting of a far healthier number of girls in 0-6 age group, too have shown a decline in the past decade. Sociologists see this trend as alarming as almost all non-tribal districts in Gujarat are already reeling under a skewed sex ratio.
All the tribal districts including Dang, Dahod, Panchmahals, Tapi, Valsad, Narmada and Bharuch, have posted a decline in the child sex ratio in 0-6 age group as per figures of Census 2011.

Ahmedabad: Two cities of Gujarat, both industrial hubs, top the list of cities with lowest sex ratio in India. Vapi, the industrial town in south Gujarat, has got the lowest sex ratio in the country with only 734 women per 1,000 men. Diamond city Surat is second with 754 women per 1,000 men.

2,000 Kg Of Unseasonal Alphonso Ready For Plucking By February

Surat: There have been cases of unseasonal fruit growing on an isolated tree but not in an entire orchard. An estimated 2,000 kg of mangoes on 100 trees of an orchard near Sarigam on the Gujarat-Maharashtra border will be ready for plucking by February.

AROUND 300 tonnes of toxic waste still lies unattended at the former factories of Union Carbide in Bhopal. Dow Chemicals, which now owns Union Carbide, the company responsible for the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, will spend £7 million on the 2012 London Olympics. The same company has refused to clean up Bhopal or pay additional compensation to the families of the dead in the horrific industrial accident of 1984. Survivors of the tragedy and activists demand that the Olympics be boycotted by India.

Gujarat's environment and forests department is aiming to bring an additional area of 120 sq km along the State's coastline under mangrove cover by the end of the financial year 2011-12.
“We aim to carry out plantation of mangroves in 120 sq km area by the end of this year. This will increase the mangrove cover in Gujarat from the present 1,080 sq km to 1,200 sq km,” said the Additional Chief Secretary, Environment and Forests, Dr S.K. Nanda.

The plantation would stretch along the 1,600-km coastline of Gujarat, he said.

GANDHINAGAR: The state's population has reached 6.04 crore in 2011, experiencing an overall decadal growth of 19.17 per cent. Gujarat has also experienced a 35.83 per cent growth in urban population between 2001 and 2011, as compared to rural areas' 9.23 per cent, which could prove to be a major policy indicator for state planners.

Nagpur: The detailed project report (DPR) of the Damanganga-Pinjal link, a project to share water of two river basins across Maharashtra and Gujarat is likely to be ready by the end of this year. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) central region, one of the agencies involved in the project, has begun geological studies for constructing dams and tunnels to connect the two rivers. GSI has already completed the surface mapping for the two dams and tunnels involved.

After declaring 43 industrial areas in India as critically polluted and imposing a moratorium on their expansion, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests is going easy on them. As many as 23 critically polluted areas have been removed from the moratorium list since last October on the basis of inadequate action plans submitted by the respective states.
