No parking on arterial roads, but only at designated spots

Soon, parking vehicles on the arterial roads of the City’s central business district (CBD) may be a costly affair. By restricting the parking to designated locations and fixing fees for the same, the government proposes to decongest the major thoroughfares, thereby eliminating traffic bottlenecks. The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) is preparing a parking action plan for the CBD in association with BBMP. To begin with, parking will be banned on the arterial roads of the City.

The BMTC has decided to run 150 more Volvo buses to IT corridors from various destinations in the City.

Speaking on the sidelines of a seminar on ‘Doubling public transport share: A thrust to make public transport a choice for every citizen’ on Thursday, Principal Secretary for Transport P B Ramamurthy said, in a recent meeting held with heads of IT companies, it was decided to increase the number of buses to IT hubs like Electronic City and Whitefield.

In short, India stands to gain much more by implementing lower sulphur fuels in tandem with other vehicular emission control measures. In particular, these benefits will stem from adopting a “one country, one fuel, one regulation” policy and reducing fuel sulphur levels to be on par with international best practices. These steps by themselves will have positive impacts on air quality in India, particularly in its most polluted cities. They will also open the door for other emission control technologies and policies to be adopted to further improve air quality and public health.

With petrol prices hiked again today and fears remaining about price volatility of the deregulated fuel, auto manufacturers in the country are expecting a jump in demand for diesel-driven passenger vehicles.

Oil marketing companies, reeling under huge losses due to high crude price in the international market and the rupee depreciation, raised petrol prices today by Rs 7.50. But diesel prices, which are still regulated, were left untouched.

Changes in traffic flow at Chirag Dilli, Siri Fort intersections

The flow of traffic between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand along the Capital's much talked about Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor will revert to the original lane system from Wednesday. The Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS), which operates the corridor, said on Tuesday that following the end of the trial runs by Central Road Research Institute on the instructions of the Delhi High Court, the corridor was handed back to it on Saturday.

The Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System which manages the much talked about Bus Rapid Transit corridor in South Delhi has got a case registered with Delhi Police against Colonel B. B. Sharan of NGO Nyaybhoomi, who is a petitioner in the Delhi High Court in a case on viability of the corridor, for physically damaging the kerb that separated the bus corridor from the rest of the passage.

The Delhi high court on Wednesday granted six weeks’ more time to the city government to file its report on the ongoing study by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) on the traffic flow on BRT corridor after opening it to all vehicles and not restricting it to just buses.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw gave more time to the government accepting its submission that the CRRI needed more time to complete its work.

Company will produce Light Commercial Vehicles in five different locations in the state

Ashok Leyland Nissan, a JV between Hinduja Group's flagship company Ashok Leyland and Japanese auto major Nissan, today signed a MoU with the Tamil Nadu government to produce Light Commercial Vehicles in five different locations.

Total investment for the project will be Rs 4,150 crore. The locations include Hosur, Pillaipakkam, Ennore, Vellivoyalchavadi and Oragdam.

People forced to leave their vehicles on the road because of lack of parking space in commercial/residential buildings will soon be able to drive to higher floors and park safely.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has recommended to the State government to permit multi-level parking in all buildings. The decision to relax rules regarding development of parking space was taken following a representation by the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India-Tamil Nadu.

The mobility projections in this Transport Outlook indicate that global passenger transport volumes in 2050 could be up to 2.5 times as large as in 2010, and freight volumes could grow by a factor of four. Emissions of CO2 grow more slowly because of increasing energy efficiency, but may nevertheless more than double. The projected evolution of mobility depends on income and population growth, and on urbanization.
