Corporation team to study Chinese waste management methods. The solution to the city's garbage problem may come all the way from Shanghai with a team of Chennai Corporation officials visiting China this week.

The nine-day mission to hunt for suitable technology will cover visits to solid waste management facilities of cities in China with focus on technology adopted in Shanghai. The Chennai Corporation is likely to collect data on waste management in Shanghai in its pursuit of waste-to-energy facilities.

Biofuels produced from various lignocellulosic biomass such as agro forest residues have been recognized to have potential, to be available substitute for or compliment to gasolines. These biofuels derived from plant materials have the potential to address the two main issues - carbon neutral and renewable. In addition they are an integral part of the emerging 'bio-economy' where plant material is used to produce specific chemicals and bulk industrial products.

After a decade of promise, advanced biofuels makers are entering a crucial make-or-break period with the first of a new generation of production facilities about to come on line.

The new facilities are designed to take biofuels beyond corn-based ethanol and begin to shift the industry to "advanced" fuels made with a lower carbon footprint derived from products that will not compete with demand for food.

JAIPUR: When the state government is gearing up to promote the technology to produce fuel out of wastes, a similar arrangement in the city is failing due to alleged sapathy of Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) in providing solid waste to one of the private companies which has set up its plant here.

A private player has established an industry to process municipal solid waste on the outskirts of Jaipur to generate 130-140 tons of refuse derived fuel (RDF) out of 400-500 tons of waste per day.

In a rare initiative, a farmer of Haryana, Ramehar Singh of Silani village in Jhajjar district, has installed a 50-KW capacity poultry litter-based biogas power plant at his poultry farm using poultry waste as feed material.

Showing the way to other farmers by his enterprise by running his 65 KVA (50-KW) biogas plant for 14 hours a day for the last three months, this self-reliant farmer now saves about `1 lakh per month. Confident of meeting his power needs, he has got his state electricity board connection disconnected.

Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd. to help in choosing right technology

A total of 31 multi-national companies on Thursday expressed interest in supplying suitable technology to the Chennai Corporation for its massive solid waste management initiative that includes remediation and scientific closure of the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumpyards.

The operator will be selected through a global tender.

The Suchitwa Mission of the Kerala government has initiated procedures for setting up a new solid waste treatment plant capable of processing 500 tonnes of material per day at Brahmapuram here. The mission, with the assistance of ICICI Kinfra Limited, a joint venture of the State government, will select an operator under a DBFOT (design, build, finance, operate and transfer) pattern in the public-private participatory mode.

The “Development of Solar Cities” programme by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, is an immense opportunity for contributing towards a sustainable India in the coming years. This programme is a crucial step towards supporting Indian cities for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects and curbing conventional energy demand by 10% in the next five years. This master plan is the outcome of the programme’s objective is to develop a road map for the city to envision and implement renewable energy and energy conservation strategies.

The Uttar Pradesh government has stepped up efforts to attract private companies from the United States and South Africa to set up units to generate electricity from solid wastes.

"I am very much interested in this scheme. I really want such units to be set up in big cities. This will not only take care of power problem but also help the urban local bodies to manage domestic waste," Urban Development Minister Mohammad Azam Khan told 'The Pioneer' here on Friday.
