Pune: A 28-member action committee of doctors has been formed to encourage medical practitioners to register for the common biomedical waste treatment facility at the Kailas crematorium.

Over 200 doctors associated with 14 different city-based associations met on Tuesday -- the last day of the 15-day drive started by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to register for the facility -- to form the action committee.

By the end of 2015, MMRDA expects to commission a regional solid waste management plant at Taloja with a capacity to process 2,500 tonnes of solid waste produced in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) daily, and convert the waste into power. MMRDA is in the process of awarding a contract to a consortium of Ramky Enviro Engineers and China's Chongqing Sanfeng Environmental Industry Group to construct and operate the processing plant for 25 years. The construction of the plant will cost about Rs 500 crore.

Kochi:The state government has decided to opt for the ‘Swiss challenge system’ of tendering, a bidding process to help private sector initiative in core sector projects, for the new solid waste treatment plant to be set up at Brahmapuram.

Urban development minister Manjalamkuzhi Ali said the cabinet has already taken a decision in this regard and tender notifications would soon be released. “By adopting this model of tendering, we will be able to finalise the bid within three months of releasing the notification,” he said.

Plans are afoot to set up twin facilities for the scientific treatment and disposal of biomedical waste in the city.

Despite being a hub of health care facilities (HCFs) generating increasingly large quantities of biomedical waste, Kochi does not have a dedicated treatment and disposal facility. The city now depends on the one run by IMAGE (Indian Medical Association Goes Eco-friendly) at Palakkad.
At present, the Common Biomedical Waste Treatment and Disposal Facility set up by the Kerala chapter of IMA in 2003 handles the biomedical waste generated by its member HCFs across the State.
