NI Water has installed a new wastewater treatment unit at a housing development near Rathfriland in a bid to improve the quality of treated effluent.

The work forms part of NI Water's multi-million pound Rural Wastewater Investment project, which aims to ensure the treated effluent meets the latest EU Directives.

The new infrastructure at the Knock Terrace housing estate includes an enclosed hi-tech tank with advanced treatment processes.

Planned by British architects Chapman Taylor, and to be executed by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), East Kidwai Nagar is an ambitious redevelopment project, pegged at an approximate cost of Rs 4,500 crore. Israel said on Monday it was building a 1.5 billion shekel ($423 million) desalination plant, which upon completion in 2013, will join four other plants in providing the country with three-quarters of its drinking water.

The government signed with Mekorot, the national water company, to build and operate the reverse osmosis plant in the Mediterranean coastal city of Ashdod, which will produce 100 million cubic meters of desalinated seawater a year, or 15 percent of Israel's household water use.

The water will cost 2.4 shekels per cubic meter, the Finance Ministry said.
