PANJIM: Desperate efforts are on to plug the entry of sewerage into Panjim’s water supply line which is already suspected of being contaminated within an area of one kilometre in the heart of the city.

The affected area is between Sky Lark apartments and Ding Dong Bar on 18th June Road. The PWD has been working round-the-clock to locate the exact point of contamination but has not yet located the same.

A steep hike in water rates without any transparency has shocked consumers in Mysore resulting in protests and demonstrations demanding a rollback.

Water rates of both domestic and commercial consumption have been raised three-fold from May 1. The minimum charge of Rs 60 has gone up to Rs 175 from May 1. The river flows through five districts of Tamil Nadu and irrigates nearly 4 lakh acres.

A large population, especially children, in 27 of the 50 Madhya Pradesh districts are threatened by the fluorosis menace as people in these districts are being forced to drink water with excessive fluoride, much beyond the permissible limit. According to the latest information available from the state public health engineering department, the fluoride content in water is much beyond the prescribed norms of 1.5 mg per litre or 1.5 part per million (ppm) in 11,460 drinking water sources (mainly handpumps) in 6,746 habitats spread across 27 districts.

Bridge across Cauvery to carry pipelines nearing completion

The Tiruchi Corporation is set to commence work on laying the pipelines across the Cauvery river, a crucial phase in the execution of new drinking water augmentation scheme for the city. Once the pumping mains are laid across the bridge, the corporation would be able to start pumping water from all the three collector wells of the Rs.221.42 crore drinking water supply augmentation scheme. The three collector wells for the new water scheme on the Coleroon river bed at Melur near Srirangam are ready already.

However, PPP model for effective utilisation of rivers, lakes will be encouraged

The government today said there was no proposal for privatisation of water resources, but would encourage public-private partnership (PPP) mode for effective utilisation of the scarce natural resource. "Privatisation is not being done and it cannot be done," Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said in the Rajya Sabha during the Question Hour and added that a river cannot be given to a private party.
