Guwahati, April 19: The city has just acquired two reasons to be more confident about its glass of water. The state public health engineering minister, Gautam Roy, today inaugurated a laboratory of the department of public health engineering to test water-carrying pipes and a few mobile water treatment plants.

Modern irrigation is one of the success stories of the 20th century. As the world’s population doubled, irrigated farming expanded from 40 million ha to almost 300 million ha today – a seven-fold increase. This revolution in water technology increased food production through improved crop yields and enabled farmers to grow additional crops each year.

Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd and GE Power & Water have signed an agreement, to work together and offer environment management solutions, including waste-water treatment and recycling.

Under the agreement, the Hyderabad-based Ramky Enviro, part of the Ramky Group, will introduce the concept of mobile water treatment plants in the country.

Here is good news for the water-starved Uttarakhand. After more than four years of experiments and research, a European Union river bank filtration (RBF) project has ignited new hopes to end the perennial drinking water problem in the hills.
