Large wind farms slightly increase temperatures near the ground as the turbines' rotor blades pull down warm air, according to researchers who analyzed nine years of satellite readings around four of the world's biggest wind farms.

The study showed for the first time that wind farms of a certain scale, while producing clean, renewable energy, do have some long-term effect on the immediate environment.

National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), the US space research center, is keen to carry out research on weather and climate in Bangladesh, the most vulnerable country to climate change.

The visiting chief scientist of Earth Science Division of NASA Hal Maring expressed this when she called on Environment and Forest Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud at the latter's Secretariat office.

The National Aeronautic and Space Administration, the US space research centre, is keen to carry out research on weather and climate in Bangladesh, the most vulnerable country to climate change.
The visiting chief scientist of Earth Science Division of NASA, Hal Maring, expressed this when she called on the environment and forest minister, Hasan Mahmud, at the latter’s secretariat office in Dhaka Thursday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has maintained records of weather and climate since the late 1800s. According to these records, the month of March, 2012 has set a new record as the warmest March ever for the contiguous United States. Across the nation, 15,000 local warm temperature records were broken. The average temperature was 51.1 degrees F, which is 8.6 degrees higher than the average 20th century March temperature. It is 0.5 degrees higher than the previous warmest March in 1910.

The winter is shrinking and the overall precipitation during the season, particularly snow, is decreasing at an alarming rate in the “Queen of Hills”, making a White Christmas and a White New Year for which it has been famous, a rarity in recent years.

GUWAHATI, Nov 24 – The changes taking place in the global weather system seem to have kept the day (maximum) temperature in the north-eastern part of India relatively higher even during the later part of November. This observation was made by H Pathak, Deputy Director General of Meteorology (DDGM) of the Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) here. Presently, easterly and north-easterly winds are prevailing over the NE region. This is causing a fair weather situation and hence no rainfall is occurring in the region during this period.

Agartala: Northeast has recorded an increase in temperature by 0.08 degree Celsius in last decade along with static dispersion of seasonal weather phenomena in the region, Regional Director ICAR, Northeast, Dr S V Ngachan on Tuesday said.

Talking to UNI here, DR Ngachan said that Barapani in Meghalaya alone had recorded a rise in temperature by two degrees Celsius in last decade and rainfall in world famous Cherrapunji (highest rainfall area of India) has reduced substantially over the year changing the complete weather cycle of the region.

Scientists have demonstrated a clear link between the 11-year sun cycle and winter weather over the northern hemisphere for the first time. They found that low solar activity can contribute to cold winters in the UK, northern Europe and parts of America. But high activity from the sun has the opposite effect. The study helps explain why the UK has been gripped by such cold winters over the last few years: the sun is just emerging from a so-called solar minimum, when solar activity is at its lowest.

Converting West African rainforests into cropland reduces rainforest in adjacent forest areas, reports research published in Geophysical Research Letters. The study, based on a computer model used to simulate rainfall under different land-use conditions, found that cutting down tropical forests in West Africa reduces precipitation over neighboring forest areas by about 50 percent due to increased temperatures over cropland areas. Higher temperatures affect the formation of rain clouds.

Sri Lanka’s weather patterns are changing and this fact was made evident on January 13, this year when temperatures dropped dramatically country wide. Colombo’s temperature went down to 18.8 degrees Celsius, the lowest recorded in 61 years.

The recent floods have been catastrophic and are the worst the country has ever faced. Yet our authorities are least bothered. Even officials at the Climate Change Secretariat are not keen when it comes to climate change adaptation or mitigation, but as usual, are keen to attend overseas trips and in turn do nothing.
