TURA: The Tura district administration has imposed Section 144 CrPC prohibiting the dumping of sewage and pumping of water from the streams of Tura in view of the drastic water shortage problem of the town.

West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi held a meeting on water conservation and containing jhumming at his office chamber on Monday in which the Garo Students Union, Mothers’ Union, Nokmas Council, School principals, church elders, senior citizens took part.

TURA: West Garo Hills district administration has constituted a water supply cell with the objective of ensuring adequate supply of potable water to Tura Municipal areas and surrounding localities.

The members of the cell are the Superintending and Executive Engineer, PHE, Tura, Additional Superintendent of Police, Tura, PK Boro, EAC and C N Sangma, EAC.

SHILLONG: The acute water scarcity that has hit Tura, West Garo Hills for the past two weeks has not only stirred anger among the residents of Tura but also the Sangma siblings who have asked the authorities concerned to take control of the matter and resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Union Minister of State for Rural Development Agatha K Sangma who is currently in Shillong has called upon Chief Secretary WMS Pariat to take serious note of the problem and resolve it at the earliest.

TURA:The Tura Public Transport System (TPTS) which is operating ten buses given under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission will soon be granted another ten new buses because of the successful running of the service.

The transport service which was launched on Republic Day, this year, has been working smoothly and meeting up to the expectations and anticipations of the people of Tura town who seem to be enjoying the amenities of the premier town transport service.

Shillong, Feb. 12: Chief minister Mukul Sangma’s plan to have a pre-budget exercise, starting from Tura on Tuesday, has come under the scanner with the Opposition NCP alleging that the government has cut short the duration of the forthcoming budget session. Opposition leader from NCP Conrad Sangma today said the government had fixed only 10 working days for the forthcoming budget session, which ideally should have been held for at least a month.

TURA: The residents of Dakopgre, a locality in Tura, have lodged a complaint with the SDO and Executive Engineer of the Public Health Engineering department, criticizing the alleged supply of contaminated potable water in the locality.

The residents allege that for the past five days the water being supplied to the locality through the Second Phase water pipeline smells of diesel and kerosene.

SHILLONG: The bird flu in East Garo Hills is officially confirmed, revealed the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills, Pravin Bakshi citing the fax message from the sophisticated government run laboratory in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

Informing this to The Sentinel on Wednesday, the Deputy Commisioner also directed the Special Task Force (STF) and Rapid Response Team (RRT) to start immediate culling of birds within 3-kms of area.

The government had already imposed power cuts from end of last year, but more load-shedding has also been planned for the future.

Power minister A.T. Mondal told reporters today that the power scenario in the state is very bleak as the Umiam lake, the state’s major hydel power generation source, is drying up.

A meeting sensitizing NGOs and Media persons on the ongoing Measles catch up campaign was conducted on Wednesday at the social Mobilization Experimentation and Training Centre (SMELC) in Dakopgre, Tura. The measles catch up campaign is a special drive to vaccinate all children between the age group of 9 months to below ten years in the district. The objective of the campaign is to swiftly make the populace immune to measles and reduce death due to the disease through 100% immunization of the children in the targeted age group.
