Puma skin found in parcel sent by post from U.S.

But when the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) officials opened the parcel at Kolkata's Foreign Post Office on August 7 they discovered the full skin of what is suspected to be a puma.

Stern law to curb wildlife smuggling
With the present Wild Life (Protection ) Act 1972 failing to deter poaching, the New Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill 2010 law will have those found guilty of offences against animals sentenced to a jail term of five to seven years with a minimum fine of Rs 5 lakh as against the present fine of Rs 10,000.

Wildlife Act likely to get more teeth
IN THE face of unabated illicit wildlife trade and the rise in instances of wildlife crimes, the environment ministry has outlined the amendments it is considering to bring to the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The ministry has now invited public comments on the draft amendments. The major emphasis of the proposed amendments is on the organised illicit wildlife trade.
