The state’s maiden vulture breeding centre in Muta, 22km from Ranchi, may not have taken wing as yet, but Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ormanjhi, closer to the capital, may soon boast a special winged guest. Forest officials and wildlife experts in Hazaribagh have nursed back to health a two-year-old Himalayan Griffon Vulture (Gyps himalayensis), which was found in a village 8km from town two weeks ago, and plan to give it a new home at Birsa zoo.

Asked to shape up or face de-recognition of the Deer Park at Hauz Khas by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) this March, the Delhi Development Authority has in its reply on Monday defended its work at the park stating that remedial work has already been initiated there.

The CZA had issued a notice to the DDA in March stating that there were a number of shortcomings in the park, including hygiene, which needed urgent attention. It also cautioned them about over-population in the small park area, which the CZA noted was the main and a very serious issue.

The third and final report on the death of a rhinoceros at the Delhi Zoo has confirmed that anthrax infection was not the cause of death. The National Centre of Disease Control report of tests conducted on blood samples of a male one-horned rhino that died on April 28 reached the Zoo authorities on Monday.

“The third report has come negative for anthrax. Everything has become normal again at the zoo and the barricades that restricted visitors’ entry to the rhino enclosure have been removed,” said R A Khan, curator of National Zoological Park, on Tuesday.

NewDelhi:The Indian Veterinary Research Institute has not found any trace of anthrax in the blood samples of the rhinoceros that died at the National Zoological Park in the Capital on Saturday.

New Delhi: The death of a rhinoceros at the National Zoological Park, Delhi, has triggered an anthrax alarm as the animal showed symptoms of the bacterial disease which is fatal in most cases.

There is marginal rise in the population of almost all the animals in the Van Vihar National Park, Bhopal except for cheetal population that witnessed downfall of about 5 per cent according to the latest report of census released here on Tuesday.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA), along with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), are to hold a consultation to discuss and design customised habitats for animals, including birds, tigers and amphibians.

BHUBANESWAR: With bird flu scare gripping several parts of the State, the Nandankanan Zoo on Tuesday went into a precautionary mode sanitising the sprawling facility and effecting preventive measures. The zoo authorities rid the entire premises of stray dogs. All poultry birds, including chicken, on the zoo premises were eliminated too.

Noise levels in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam are touching alarming levels with the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board ignoring the problem. While reports prepared by the Board itself say that residents of Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam are being exposed to high levels of sound, little has been done to tackle this. Authorities, while expressing helplessness, refused to comment on the issue.
