Status of water quality in coal mining areas of Meghalaya, India

The coal is one of the extensively utilized minerals in Meghalaya. Though coal deposits in the state is found all along the southern fringe of Shillong plateau, Jaintial Hills District is a major producer of coal. Mining operation, undoubtedly has brought weath and employment opportunity in the area, but simultaneously had led to extensive environmental degradation and disruption of traditional values in the society. The water bodies of the area are the greatest victims of the coal mining.
