Low carbon society scenario - Bhopal 2035

Bhopal is leaving a huge carbon footprint on the environment due to its energy consumption pattern and continuous depletion of green cover. There is a rapid increase in energy consumption by the urban population. And with the recent depletion in city's green cover in the name of development, the city is not far from becoming an arid zone. According to a report "Low carbon society scenario - Bhopal 2035" by MANIT and School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), fuel wood, LPG and kerosene play a major role by contributing 70% to the total energy consumption in the city. The report also states that the commercial transport sector of the city contributes to more than 80% of the total CO2 emission. In order to develop Bhopal as a low carbon society (LCS) by 2035, the report provides certain proposals like adopting green technologies in all civic service provisions, use of solar energy for street lighting, rainwater harvesting, recycled grey water for urban landscaping and recycling of garbage. The report estimates that the total Green House Gas (GHG) emission in Bhopal can be reduced to 7 million tCO2 which accounts for 40% reduction as compared to the current emission of 12 million tCO2.
