The new initiative would cover 112 km of roads in the Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones of the civic body.

The President, as the Minister of Finance and Planning, has submitted the proposal seeking the financial assistance.

‘Experience the plight of manual scavengers’

GUWAHATI, Jan 17 – The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has assured people that the task of cleaning the drains of the lanes and by-lanes of the city would be completed well ahead of the monsoons season, to check the problem of waterlogging. Countering the allegations that it is due to the negligence of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation that the city is flooded after every rainfall, the GMC officials said that the work of drain cleaning in the city is done by three different government departments.

With the State witnessing a high level of migration from rural areas to urban localities and as cities were expanding at a rapid pace, the government has launched Rs.6,654 crore ‘Integrated Urban Development Mission' to provide basic facilities in corporation, municipal and town panchayats.

The government will spend Rs.757.28 crore this fiscal for works in urban localities related to laying new underground drainage and storm water drains, provide safe drinking water, roads, solid waste management, streetlights and other basic amenities, said an official release.
