Civilizations From Oldest Stars Had Enough Time To Reach Earth If They Wanted To: Researchers. Washington: If alien life really exists, they would have found humans by now, but consciously avoiding us for unknown reasons, a new study has suggested. Researchers, who calculated the time a society would take to muster up resources and know-how to travel to another world, found that alien civilizations starting from the oldest stars in the galaxy would have had more than enough time to reach Earth.

Experts looking at global climate models say there’s a good chance that February and March too will see below normal temperatures. As several parts of India reel under a cold spell, here's worse news: expect the rest of the winter to be colder than usual. Experts looking at global climate models say there's a good chance that February and March too will see below normal temperatures.

What seems to be loading the dice in favour of a cold winter is La Nina - a phenomenon better known in India for aiding good monsoon rains.

HOUSTON: Milky way after all is milky in colour for sure! Scientists have revealed that our galaxy is aptly named Milky Way as it looks white, the colour of fresh snow in the early morning. University of Pittsburgh astronomers said their finding is significant because we are located in the middle of the Milky Way, which had previously made it difficult to accurately determine the colour of the galaxy.

Efforts to limit climate change generally focus on reducing carbon dioxide emissions caused by burning fossil fuels. However, another byproduct of fossil fuel combustion is black carbon, a major component of soot. Sources include diesel truck and car engines as well as wood fires, kilns, and stoves. Particles of black carbon in the atmosphere absorb sunlight and can have significant effects on the temperature, as do ozone, methane and other chemicals.

THIS year could become one of the top 10 hottest since 1850, with global temperatures expected to be almost half a degree Celsius warmer in 2012 than the long-term (1961-1990) average of 14 degrees, the UK’s Met Office said on Wednesday.

The prediction follows provisional figures published by the Met Office and University of East Anglia last month, which showed that temperatures in 2011 were 0.36 degrees above the long-term average to make it the 11th warmest year on record.

This November, everyone wondered what happened to the winters. So far, the season has been rather lukewarm and promises to be so for the next month or so. With December already halfway through, are we headed for a shorter, warmer winter this time?

Los Angeles: More than three decades after launching, Nasa’s workhorse spacecraft is inching closer to leaving the solar system behind. Currently 11 billion miles away from the sun, Voyager 1 has been exploring the fringes of the solar system since 2004. Scientists said on Monday the spacecraft has entered a new region in the solar system that they have dubbed the “stagnation zone”.

The most Earth-like planet ever discovered is orbiting a Sun-like star 600 light years away, every 290 days. US’s Nasa (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) said the Kepler space telescope confirmed its first-ever planet — Kepler-22b — in a habitable zone outside our solar system. It is 2.4 times the size of the Earth, putting it in a class known as “super-Earths”.
