Urban areas are responsible for significant amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but cities can have quite different values of carbon footprints. The purpose of this paper is to identify the determinants of urban GHG emissions in order to explain these differences. Seven global cities – Bangkok, Chicago, London, Madrid, Mexico City, Milan and New York City – have been included in the paper's sample. These cases have been chosen in order to represent a variety of characteristics and contexts of developed and developing countries and according to data availability.

In this new briefing paper Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) focuses on state of waterbodies, conservation and management in India and provides a review of the existing policies, acts and laws to tackle loss of urban water bodies.

The union urban development ministry has decided to consider the proposal for Metro in cities with 20 lakh plus population.
With this announcement, Tier II cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Patna, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Indore, Nagpur, Kochi, Coimbatore, Kozhikode qualifie to get the Metro rail system with the Centre’s support.

NEW DELHI, 2 OCT: A network of mass transport systems is imperative to avert urban vehicular traffic as the number of cities with more than 10 lakh people will increase from 48 to 68 in the next two decades, according to a study released by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, here today. So the government should move quickly to establish the Metro as the best mass transport means in urbanising India as a policy, it said.

The Pune-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), Parisar, has taken strong exception to the comments made by some Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) corporators in connection with the role of NGOs in the city’s eco-conservation.

The trustee of the NGO, Sujit Patwardhan, has written to former mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale, independent corporator Ujwal Keskar and NCP corporator Subhash Jagtap, who on August 25 criticised NGOs for allegedly harming the city’s environment during a general body meeting held to discuss the environment status report (ESR) of the city.

The three-week-long ‘Summer School on sustainable habitats’ will be held in four cities in India, including Pune, from September 5-23. The Summer School is being jointly organised by German International Cooperation (GIZ) and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The issue of sanitation, low-cost housing and energy efficiency will be discussed at the event under the topic of urban sustainability concepts and national urban policy framework.

The event will be held at the Institute of Environment Education and Research at Bharati Vidyapeeth University in Pune.

The fourth ‘Global Initiative for Restructuring Environment and Management’ (GIREM) leadership summit that started in Goa yesterday, will conclude on October 1.
The topics of the summit include waste management, land use policies and choice of appropriate business destinations, which will be discussed by industry experts at the conference.

The Union Urban Development Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, would deliver a key-note address during the conference. He would also give away the GIREM Leadership Awards.
