Irate public of Podanur and Vellalore area on Monday staged a demonstration condemning the burning of garbage at the compost yard and the resultant smoke causing health hazards.

Flanked by the Deonar dumping ground on one side and refineries and chemical factories on the other, M-West is one of the most polluted wards in the city. Residents of Chembur and Mahul complain that the dense pollution in their areas has made life a constant ordeal. Locals blame the respiratory ailments that are rampant in MWest on the proximity to the dumping ground, a recently setup bio-medical waste incinerator and industrial units.

The present yard poses a threat to residents of Nagercoil Municipality

It is high time the district administration explored ways to ensure safe and scientific disposal of garbage collected from the Nagercoil municipal limit and other extension areas either in the existing compost yard at Valampurai Vilai, situated in the heart of the town or in some other places.

A couple of cases of Hepatitis B were reported from Palamel near Mavelikkara and isolated cases from neighbouring places in the district recently, according to the District Medical Officer (in-charge), Jacob Varghese.

Mr. Varghese was speaking at a meeting to discuss the action plan for prevention and control of communicable diseases here on Wednesday. Later speaking to The Hindu he said that the real cause of the disease in the area has not been ascertained yet.

The panel, at its sitting here on Monday, called for reports on the encroachments into the Kallai river about which there had been complaints. It also asked the State Pollution Control Board to submit a report on the quality of river water based on scientific tests, in view of complaints about widespread pollution.

All the dumping sites in Gurgaon will be videographed to ensure timely lifting and disposal of garbage from the city. The Haryana Urban Development Authority has directed all executive engineers to give daily progress report by doing videography of each dumping site to ensure cleanliness of the city, an official spokesman said here today.

The engineers have been asked to give details of dumping sites in each sector, list of heavy machines deployed, their contact number and number of labourers deployed in each sector, he said.
