It’s been often asked why our officialdom, with all the intellectual capital at its command, is unable to quantify the number of the really poor in India. Is this such a difficult thing to do? It is all the more baffling because in recent times, the debate on India’s poverty has only further confounded ordinary citizens.

Lepchas seek ‘status' clarity

KOLKATA: Members of the Lepcha community, an indigenous tribe of the Darjeeling hills, went on an indefinite hunger strike here on Wednesday demanding clarity from the State and Central governments on their “status” as a community.
The Lepchas are the indigenous tribals of the region that was originally a part of territory governed by the ruler of Sikkim.

After airport, Centre questions development of saltpan land in Mumbai
The state government is under pressure from the Centre to stay the release of 2,177 hectares of saltpan land in Mumbai for redevelopment, fearing it would lead to trouble in the flood-prone city.
The state government had planned to give this land to private developers for slum rehabilitation projects in lieu of incentives.

SAMBALPUR: A recent reply from the Rengali Tehsil office to a query under RTI Act has opened a can of worms.
Having failed to get a response on the rampant pollution due to growing industrialisation in the block, Sarpanch of Rengali gram panchayat Laxmi Narayan Sahu had sought information on land acquired by the 10 industries besides land leased out for mining on July 26.
