Population drama: World population crosses 7 billion - Uttar Pradesh's newly born girl world's 7 billionth citizen.

The world is running out of time to make sure there is enough food, water and energy to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population and to avoid sending up to 3 billion people into poverty, a U.N. report warned on Monday.

As the world's population looks set to grow to nearly 9 billion by 2040 from 7 billion now, and the number of middle-class consumers increases by 3 billion over the next 20 years, the demand for resources will rise exponentially.

In this article, an attempt is made to answer the question: Can renewable energy sources eventually supply India’s electricity needs in the future? The estimates made here indicate that even with a frugal per capita electricity need of 2000 kWh/annum and a stabilized population of 1700 million by 2070, India would need to generate 3400 TWh/yr. As opposed to this, a systematic analysis of the information available on all the renewable energy sources indicates that the total potential is only around 1229 TWh/yr. It is concluded that in the future as fossil fuels are exhausted, renewable

The Census of India has recently published Provisional Population Totals, Paper - II of 2011: India, Volume-II. Based on this, TCPO has prepared a report which analyzes the pattern of urbanization, number of towns, state-wise and district-wise urban population. As at present, the data is available only for Class-I towns, the report will be updated when the Census of India releases the figures for the remaining classes.

This paper is the first attempt at examining the growth performance across Indian states during 2001-09, a period also marked by the global financial crisis. We report four key findings. First, consistent with the fact that the decade was the best one for Indian macroeconomic performance, growth increased across almost all major states in 2001-09 compared to 1993-2001. Second, nevertheless, we continue to see the phenomenon of divergence or rising inequality across states: on average the richer states in 2001 grew faster in 2001-09.

Navi Mumbai, the satellite township adjacent to Mumbai, has reported what could be the lowest sex ratio in the country. A survey conducted by the City and Industrial Development Corporation of India (CIDCO) has revealed that the township has 697 girls for 1,000 boys under the age of six. A similar survey conducted in 2005 revealed the ratio to be 745 girls to 1,000 boys in the same age group.

The CIDCO's figures are far lower than the provisional census figures of 901 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of six.

The number of children in the United States considered poor rose by 1 million in 2010, the US Census said Thursday, with more than one in five of the youngest Americans now living in poverty.

‘Children who live in poverty, especially young children, are more likely than their peers to have cognitive and behavioural difficulties, to complete fewer years of education, and, as they grow up, to experience more years of unemployment,’ the Census said.

The problem is not population growth but the patterns of consumption. (Editorial)

The world's population of seven billion is set to rise to at least 10 billion by 2100, but could top 15 billion if birth rates are just slightly higher than expected, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

In a report ahead of ceremonies on October 31 to mark the seven billionth human alive today, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) warned demographic pressure posed mighty challenges for easing poverty and conserving the environment.
