Mumbai: The Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) has banned the use of live animals in dissection and other experiments in educational and research institutions. But scientists conducting new molecular research will be exempted from the ban.

Mumbai: Caged rats are being gassed to death by various airlines to test the efficacy of their aircraft cabin fumigation. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India have complained to Mumbai airport authorities to stop this ‘barbaric’ practice immediately.

In a major relief to bullocks forced to race by their innumerable owners, who take pride in exhibiting or selling them after subjecting them to much torture, the Bombay High Court on Monday quashed a government corrigendum allowing non-castrated bulls to participate in bullock-cart races in the state.

Animal rights protection bodies have taken a strong notice of the horrific details of deaths of hundreds of monkeys at the Gopalpur sterilisation centre in Kangra and demanded a judicial probe into the programme to contain the simian population. They have also called for a review of the programme and demanded that till that time there should be no more sterilisation of monkeys.

A notification issued by the Government of India banning the use of bulls as performing animals has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the adrenaline pumping bullock cart races at the 76th Kila Raipur Games that are slated to kick off at Kila Raipur village in Ludhiana tomorrow. Animal Welfare Board of India, (AWBI), Ministry of Environment and Forests, has written to Subodh Chandra Agrawal, Chief Secretary, Government of Punjab, asking him to ensure bullock cart races are not organised at the Kila Raipur games, also known as mini rural Olympics.

After years of defensiveness, a siege mentality and the stonewalling of any criticism, a quiet revolution is under way in animal research. What has triggered this change of heart? It's partly down to the economic climate plus fewer new medicines - despite increased investment in research - and the removal of much of the threat from animal rights extremism, in the UK at least. As Hindus gear up to celebrate naag panchami on Thursday, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) today urged them to discourage atrocities against the reptile and report snake charmers to authorities.

"Naag panchami, held in the honour of serpent god Naag Devta, instead of paying tribute to the snakes, becomes a mockery. It is a torture for these fascinating reptiles," PETA India chief functionary Poorva Joshipura said.

Scientific experiments using monkeys should continue in the UK subject to rigorous safeguards, according to a review of research over a 10-year period. But the study, commissioned by the country’s biomedical science funding agencies, found that 9 per cent of research projects using monkeys showed “no clear scientific, medical or social benefit”. “We found that some research projects were unlikely to be beneficial and the claims made for them were implausible,” said Sir Patrick Bateson, president of the Zoological Society of London, who led the review.
