The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined Square Hospital Ltd Tk 5 lakh for creating sound pollution at Panthapath in the city.
In a drive, a team led by DoE Director (Enforcement) Mohammed Munir Chowdhury found a high-voltage generator producing noise at 65-75 decibels at the hospital around 10:50pm.
The environment preservation law declares 100 square metres of space around a hospital as silent zone and limits noise level below 35 decibels in those areas at night.

Noise levels in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam are touching alarming levels with the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board ignoring the problem. While reports prepared by the Board itself say that residents of Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam are being exposed to high levels of sound, little has been done to tackle this. Authorities, while expressing helplessness, refused to comment on the issue.

Sri Lanka has decided to enact new legislation to control sound pollution for the first time, Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has announced Friday.

According to the Minister, the new legislation will ban motorists using loud horns beyond 105 decibels and those exceeding the limit will be punished.

The new legislation, which has been gazetted under the National Environment Act No 47 of 1980, will be presented in the parliament soon, the Minister said.

In the wake of complaints of noise pollution caused by Metro trains, the DMRC has resorted to regular greasing of tracks on sharp curves and erecting noise barriers at some locations, the government said today.

It, however, maintained that such disturbances were harmless for the residents living close to Metro lines.

To bring down noise levels in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has roped in an Italy-based company to conduct noise mapping study in some areas. The study, which began last week, will be conducted at five noise-sensitive spots in the city — civic-run KEM Hospital at Parel, Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, a municipal school in Hindu Colony Dadar, civic owned-Sion Hospital and Paris Gymkhana. The civic body plans to instal noise barriers in these areas after the study.
