India has declared itself free from bird flu (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza). The declaration was made here on December 29, 2011, and notified to the OIE (Office International des Epizooties, which later became the World Organisation for Animal Health). However, states have been advised to keep up the vigil, according to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

Guwahati: Over 15000 birds were culled in Assam’s Dhubri district following the detection of avian influenza in Agomoni area of the district.

Rapid Response Teams had culled the birds in 14 villages of Agomoni area after the avian flu virus was confirmed about a fortnight back, state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department sources said here.

Guwahati: The animal husbandry and veterinary department in Assam has ordered the culling of wild and domestic birds to stop the spread of avian flu in Dhubri district.

Personnel from the rapid response team culled nearly 4,500 birds at Bhamundanga, regarded as the epicenter of avian flu in Dhubri.
“About 24,000 birds will be culled in the affected zone,” said a senior department official. “We have asked officials in Dhubri to meet the target as soon as possible. Since the disease is contagious, we don’t want to take any risk,” he said.

The scheme for Extending Green Revolution to Eastern India was introduced under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) in 2010-11. It was aimed at increasing agricultural production through use of new seeds and advanced agricultural technologies. Assam was included under the scheme in the later part of the 2010-11 fiscal. Rs 17.50 crore was allotted to Assam under this scheme, said sources in the Agriculture Department.

Guwahati, Aug. 7: The leather industry and beef processing units in neighbouring Bangladesh are encouraging smuggling of Indian cattle through the porous Indo-Bangladesh borders, including the stretch of international border in Dhubri district.

The Union home ministry has said the leather and tannery industries and processed beef units in Bangladesh were mostly dependent on smuggled Indian cattle. Export of the items produced by these units to West Asian countries led to further encouragement of cross-border smuggling.

GUWAHATI, July 29 – The number of people who have died of encephalitis in the State has shot up to 147. Of them, 44 died of confirmed Japanese Encephalitis (JE). The number of districts affected by the disease has also soared up to 16, sources in the Health Department said.

Of those who died of the disease, 103 died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). So far, the total number of people affected by the disease stands at 621. Of them, 153 are found to be JE positive cases.

GUWAHATI, July 27 – The Census of India-2011 Provisional Population Totals (Rural-Urban Distribution Assam) which was released on Monday has recorded a decadal urbanisation growth of 27.61, which is much lower than the corresponding figure of 38.24 per cent of the previous decade.

 

The urban population of Assam now stands at 43,88,756 and accounts for a percentage of 14.08 of its total population. This share was 12.90 per cent in the previous decade.
