Jorhat, Feb. 3: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration will help the tea industry study the impact of climate change on tea bushes. The additional vice-chairman of Tea Research Association, Prabhat Bezboruah, said the recently formed working group on global climate change would take help from Nasa to study climate change and its impact on tea bushes.

JORHAT, Jan 17 – Visiting the erosion-hit areas at Salmora, Majuli this afternoon, P K Bansal, Union Cabinet Minister of Water Resources and V H Pala, Minister of State for Water Resources, stated at a meeting held in the Majuli College playground near Daria Bridge that Majuli has enough potential to get recognition as a World Heritage Site from UNESCO. Bansal also said that the required nomination dossier for the recognition has already been submitted to the authority concerned.

Jorhat, Jan. 4: Do not kill endangered turtles just because they taste delicious with rice, sang a group of youths, standing in a semi-circle, strumming a guitar, hours after rescuing seven of the species from a local market in Jorhat. The group belongs to socio-cultural organisation Replica, which works in various sectors, including AIDS control, anti-tobacco and anti-drugs campaigns. Today, after rescuing the seven peacock-marked soft-shell turtles from a market, they decided to raise awareness about the perils of killing endangered species by singing a little ditty.

GUWAHATI: The Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha has expressed alarm at the fact that the indigenous people of Assam are slowly losing their land rights.

Assam Sanmilita Manasangha working president Matiur Rahman said, “It is the responsibility of the State Government to protect the land rights of the sons of the soil. But unfortunately, this government appears to ignore the issue of protection of the land rights of the indigenous people.

Jorhat, Oct. 31: The Jorhat District Tobacco Control Cell, in association with traders’ organisations, has decided to install hoardings carrying messages of harmful effects of tobacco in shops in the district to boost the anti-tobacco campaign.

The traders have also agreed to distribute stickers to be put on passenger-carrying transport vehicles and put up warning messages at small paan shops, stating that selling of tobacco to persons below 18 years was illegal.

Guwahati, Oct. 27: Assam’s power sector will substantially improve with the involvement of Asian Development Bank (ADB) as it will help meet the increasing demand and bring down the transmission and distribution losses.
A report brought out by the ADB on India-ADB Development Partnership recently said the electricity sector in Assam was poised for change. By implementing well-researched recommendations of the ongoing consultancy support, fundamental changes would be introduced.

The project will be showcased at the World Petroleum Conference Social Responsibility Global Village to be held as part of the World Petroleum Conference at Doha, Qatar, from December 4 to 8 this year.

The scheme for Extending Green Revolution to Eastern India was introduced under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) in 2010-11. It was aimed at increasing agricultural production through use of new seeds and advanced agricultural technologies. Assam was included under the scheme in the later part of the 2010-11 fiscal. Rs 17.50 crore was allotted to Assam under this scheme, said sources in the Agriculture Department.
