SIVASAGAR, Feb 7 – Muga, or the “golden silk”, has always been the pride of Assam. Over the years, muga silk has become a unique part of Assamese culture and tradition. This Assam’s golden silk has also got recognition in the international arena. Recently, it was declared by skin specialists of the world that dresses made of muga or eri, prevent skin diseases.

SIVASAGAR, Feb 6 – Unabated erosion caused by the Dikhow, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, is posing a serious threat to the existence of Hanhsora Manipuri Gaon in Sivasagar district. The erosion during the rainy season has been continuing for the last 15 years. The situation is very critical and it is feared that the entire area, inhabited by Manipuri people who came during Ahom era with Queen Kuranga Nayani, wife of Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha, will be washed away by the Dikhow in the coming years if effective measures are not initiated early.

SIVASAGAR: The Assam Minister for Fishery and Information and Public Relations, Basanta Das paid a visit to the Fishery Training Centre at Joysagar in Sivasagar on Tuesday.

The Minister took stock of the present condition of the Fishery Training Centre which was established in the year 1961 by the bank of the historic Joysagar tank. Das was also accompanied by Sivasagar DC , Jatindra Lahkar and MLA of Nazira, Debabrat Saikia.

Dibrugarh, Oct. 16: The Assam Medical College and Hospital and Regional Medical Research Councilat Lahowal in Dibrugarh will soon conduct a largescale study on the effects of Japanese encephalitis vaccine on adults.

This is for the first time in the world that such a study will be conducted. The Rs 99.8-lakh project has been approved by the World Health Organisation and the Centre.

Guwahati: Assam on Sunday started adult vaccination programme for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Sivsagar district, becoming the first state to undertake adult vaccination in the country.

State Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma inaugurated the programme at Geleki in the district.

The Assam government on Sunday launched the country’s first-ever project of a vaccination drive against Japanese encephalitis, with a target of covering eight lakh people in the worst-affected Sivasagar district.

The pilot project which would take ten days in the first phase to administer vaccination to eight lakh people - all above 15 years - would be followed by a two-year study by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) on the impact and efficacy of the vaccine, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday.

Jorhat, Sept. 4: A rare species of spotted pond turtle, which was rescued a few days ago, got a new lease of life after it was treated and released in Torani Beel in Sivasagar district last evening.

The turtle, which is on the endangered species list of the Wildlife Protection Act, was rescued from a drain at Sapehkhati by Seven Look, an NGO associated with wildlife conservation.

Guwahati: Assam health department will launch an experimental adult vaccination drive as a preventive against deadly Japanese encephalitis in Sivasagar district of Assam, according to Assam Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma.

Kokrajhar, Aug. 25: Another person died of Japanese encephalitis here today, taking the toll to four.
Bimal Mondol, 35, of Saptagram in Dhubri district died at Kokrajhar Rupnath Brahma civil hospital, where he had been referred to after falling ill. Earlier, Judeswari Goyary, 55, of Khargaon village in Kokrajhar had died in a Bongaigaon hospital on Saturday, Gangusham Narzary, 38, of Shyamgaon in Kokrajhar had died on August 17 and Monoda Bala Dey Sarkar, 90, of Daloabari had died at Kokrajhar Rupnath Brahma civil hospital earlier this month.

The health department has decided to propose a mass adult vaccination drive in Sivasagar district for everyone above 15 years to curb the spread of encephalitis.

The move comes in view of rising number of encephalitis cases in the district.

Vaccination below 15 years is already being done across the state.
