GMCH to set up new lab to test sputum for micro bacterium tuberculosis

For the first time in the North-east, an intermediate reference laboratory is going to be set up at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for the culture and drug sensitivity test of sputum for micro bacterium tuberculosis.

Authorities in Lakhimpur district in eastern Assam were on Thursday compelled to stop forcible movement of an over-dimensional consignment comprising machineries to the 2000-MW Lower Subansiri dam and hydro-electric project in Arunachal Pradesh after several thousand protesters blocked the highway shouting slogans against construction of the dam.

GUWAHATI: Protests have started in northern Assam since Wednesday morning to thwart an attempt by the authorities to transport turbines to the NHPC big dam site at Gerukamukh in Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

Supporters of several organisations, including the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), have erected blockades throughout the route that the turbine-carrying trucks are likely to take enroute to Gerukamukh.

GUWAHATI, Oct 28 – Alleging that the State Government has failed to protect the interests of the people living on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, the locals of the area complained that the State is losing its land due to Arunachal's aggression.

Arunachal Agrasan Pratirodh Samity, a forum to protest the alleged land-grabbing by the neighbouring State, today said that the Behali reserve forest and Singalijan reserve forest under Sonitpur district are facing encroachment by the people of the neighbouring State since formation of Arunachal Pradesh as a new State in 1971.
