The Union environment ministry has deferred clearance to the proposed cast steel wheel project of the Indian Railways at Saran district of Bihar, and has sought a slew of clarifications before a reconsideration.
The Railways have proposed to set up a rail cast wheel plant at a cost of Rs 1417.23 crore at Bela village of Saran district in Bihar.

PATNA: Altogether 18 children were born blind in the arsenic affected blocks of Bhojpur district during the past three months, Bihar Health Minister Nand Kishore Yadav confirmed.

The cause of the blindness was not yet known, but health department officials were in touch with ophthalmologists, he said.

Water becomes contaminated after use due to mixing of pollutants. The waste water goes into the rivers, lakes and ponds and results in eutrophication of water bodies. The ponds of Saran (Bihar) are rich repository of aquatic flora & fauna. Most of the ponds are becoming polluted due to different human activities and harms human as well as aquatic bodies.

The colonial dispensation in north Bihar believed that the rivers of the flood plains needed to be controlled. The zamindar became the pivot around which the implementation of these flood control efforts revolved. Along with the railways and roads, the uncontrolled manner in which many zamindary embankments were built led to a deterioration in the flood situation.

India is a country with vast population having crossed over 110 crores mark and growing at alarming rate. It is yet another fact of concern that there has not been a proportionate increase in the production level of foodgrains in the country.
