SHILLONG: After the successful implementation of the SPTS buses in the East Khasi Hills, the State Government has now decided to introduce ten buses, procured under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), in Jaintia Hills district.

Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh will formally flag off a fleet of swanky buses on February 18.

Govt unable to acquire land for flyovers

Shillong: Hopes for Shillongites to see flyovers in the city is about to come crashing to the ground with the government expressing its inability to acquire land for construction of these flyovers.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has flagged off the Shillong Supplement Public Transport Services at U Soso Tham Auditorium here for the benefit of the people in the capital city. Twenty five vehicles have been flagged off and the remaining 15 vehicles will be put to operation within 15 days, official sources said. It may be mentioned that under JNNURM, 120 buses, 20 standard buses and 100 mini buses have already been sanctioned for the public transport system in Shillong since the 22nd July last year.

Shillong, Jan. 16: The Indian Science Congress Association Young Scientist Award 2011-12 was conferred on a Shillong scholar by former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Jeremy Dkhar, a PhD in botany from the North Eastern Hill University (Nehu) received the award on January 4 during the 99th Indian Science Congress held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar.

The award was introduced by the Indian Science Congress Association to encourage young Indian scientists in different disciplines of research.

SHILLONG: Following up on its decision to construct the four-lane highway along the proposed Umsning Bypass, the State Government has decided to construct the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road through the proposed Sohiong Bypass and not through Sohiong village as was being demanded by PWD Minister and Sohiong legislator HDR Lyngdoh.

SHILLONG: The government of Meghalaya is making efforts to overcome the problems of disposal of garbage.

In this regard, the State Government has decided to use the latest technology to covert the garbage and other forms of wastes into electricity. Recently the State Government has floated an expression on interest for taking a pilot project on the Public Private Participation (PPP) mode for disposal of garbage and other forms of wastes in Shillong.

Madhya Pradesh’s amended legislation that allows raiding of any premises on the assumption that cow slaughter is likely to take place, or beef is likely to be stored or transported, could be misused, feel jurists, minorities and political parties.

SHILLONG: The decision of the state government to replace plastic bags with eco-friendly hand woven bags called “Pla Iew” and “Sla” or leaves has taken a backseat due to want of manufacturers and suppliers. The use of such environment friendly bags/leaves came in the heels of rampant rivers and stream water pollution in the city and the effort of the state government to turn the city into a cent percent “no plastic zone.”

SHILLONG: The Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department has assured people of Mawlai that the water, which being pumped through the source at Umsohlang stream in Mawlai Mawdatbaki, is fit for drinking.

A day after the members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) found that impure water being supplied to various localities in Mawlai, Additional Chief Engineer, PHE Department SK Sun refuted the allegation saying “the water is supplied after treating it properly in its plant”.
