Agriculture sector contributes a major portion in gross production of India. In spite of this, agriculture today is finding itself in increasing difficulties. The adverse impact of agriculture based on synthetic fertilizers and herbicides is visible in the degradation of soil fertility, quality of food, taste of food and so on. Organic agriculture may prove to be a boon to curb these adverse effects. There is dearth of information on organic farming in India in general and in Uttarakhand in particular.

New Delhi: India’s forest cover has declined by 367 sq km between 2007 and 2009. While the figure may not seem alarming, it runs counter to the impression that afforestation and conservation programmes are yielding results.

In order to highlight the importance of forests for the country and the contribution of ICFRE in this vital sector of national importance, ICFRE has published a book Forestry in the Service of Nation: ICFRE Technologies. The book has been prepared with a view to provide a consolidated account of contributions made by the forestry sector over the years.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Chinese Academy of Forestry and the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education to foster cooperation between the two nations in identified fields of research.

A six-member high-level Chinese delegation, headed by CAF president Zhang Shougong, visited ICFRE, Dehradun, on Monday. The delegation interacted with ICFRE officials to identify research areas for cooperation in the areas of forestry sciences.

The Uttarakhand Government has amended the hill industrial policy-2008 by extending its benefits beyond 2018 to 2025 and decided to set up 11 new industrial hubs. This was decided by the Maj Gen BC Khanduri Cabinet on Saturday. This was disclosed by the Principal Secretary Industries, Rakesh Sharma in the presence of Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar while interacting with mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting at the Secretariat on Saturday.

Water security is one of the most important ingredients of the human security as the agricultural and industrial sectors are heavily dependent on water. Externally, it has lead to tensions between India and the neighbouring countries, and given rise to many intra-State conflicts internally.

Two microwatersheds namely Arnigad and Bansigad near Mussoorie, equipped with hydrometeorological instruments were selected to monitor the impact of forest cover on stream discharge. Arnigad microwatershed is having dense forest cover and Bansigad is with degraded forest.

The Uttarakhand Health Department has deployed the rapid action team in village Sultanpur and nearby areas of Haridwar district following nine more persons testing positive for dengue fever on Sunday. With this, the total number of dengue patients in the village rose to over 25, action team leader Gurnam Singh said.

About 1,500 pilgrims are stranded on the Rishikesh-Gangotri route since Thursday. Over 20 villages still cut off. The toll on life and property is rising as monsoon wreaks havoc in the hills. The scale of destruction goes up with each passing year

Dehradun: On Thursday morning, about 160 vehicles carrying more than 1,500 tourists and pilgrims from Gangotri and Uttarkashi were stranded on the 300km Rishikesh-Gangotri road due to fresh landslides on the route. Four days on, the stretch is yet to be cleared. The nightmare continues for those stuck on this arterial road.

With the launch of DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short Course) Plus medicine for tuberculosis patients, Uttarakhand will become the first Himalayan State in the country to launch the service free of cost for the patients.

The State Health Department revised the treatment module for the patients to attain 100 per cent cure rate.
