The panel, at its sitting here on Monday, called for reports on the encroachments into the Kallai river about which there had been complaints. It also asked the State Pollution Control Board to submit a report on the quality of river water based on scientific tests, in view of complaints about widespread pollution.

Officials fail to act despite orders from the Forest Minister

A Tamil Nadu company has allegedly been quarrying on an encroached government land at the tiger reserve near Biligirirangana Temple Wildlife Sanctuary (BRTWLS) near Huthuri village in Hanur of Kollegal taluk.

The High Court (HC) yesterday directed the Rajuk authorities to free Gulshan Lake from grabbing and encroachment in seven days.
During the hearing on the rule, the court said it has jurisdiction to empower any authority to save the environment, which includes the lake.
The court's action followed a remark made by Nurul Huda, chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) who stated that his office is not empowered to remove illegal structures from the lake, as it (lake) is beyond Rajuk's jurisdiction.

Boost to protection of green belt around Bangalore

In a big boost to the protection of green belt around Bangalore, the State Minor Irrigation Department has taken up a project to rejuvenate and fence 18 tanks located within the green belt limits, after clearing encroachments.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has written to the State government to abide by a July 2011 High Court order to release 50 per cent of the funds set aside for the rejuvenation of lakes in the City.

Pegging the estimated funds at Rs 238 crore, the Palike has sought Rs 119 crore for the purpose.

The domestic and stray animals are also affecting the conservation efforts, say findings of the study — published as guidelines by the Union ministry of environment and forests for the Great Indian Bustard recovery programme. Kutch has a population of around 50 GIBs in the area.

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to name those officials who made illegal allotments in the catchment area of Ramgarh dam and also the list of those influential persons who got the land in that area.

Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari asked the government to file the compliance report by January 31, 2012. The court also stayed all land allotments in the catchment areas of the dam, rivers, nullahs or any other water body in the state with immediate effect.
