NEW DELHI: Ironical as it may be, DDA has no jurisdiction over a large part of the Yamuna floodplain located within Delhi. Consequently, while tonnes of construction debris is dumped along the Pushta Road in east Delhi, choking water bodies and generally making a mess of the riverbed in the heart of the city, DDA says it cannot take action as the land in question belongs to the UP irrigation department.

The Chennai Corporation will construct a stormwater drain network, totalling nearly 800 km, in the areas that have been merged with it as part of the measures to prevent water-logging.

The new areas come under the Corporation zones of Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur. Areas where water-logging is severe would receive priority in implementation of the project.

Land degradation, synonymous to desertification in arid, semi arid and sub-humid region, covers the processes adversely affecting productive capacity of land under different land use systems. Present paper reports the extent, type and severity of land degradation in south Asian countries. Impact of land degradation contributing factors including population and poverty, climate change and natural hazards, agriculture globalization, overgrazing and livestock, summer fallowing and inappropriate land use management are discussed.

This article summarizes the results of water productivity assessment in 10 river basins across Asia, Africa and South America, representing a range of agro-climatic and socio-economic conditions. Intensive farming in the Asian basins gives much greater agricultural outputs and higher water productivity. Largely subsistence agriculture in Africa has significantly lower water productivity. There is very high intra-basin variability, which is attributed mainly to lack of inputs, and poor water and crop management.

Excessive use of concrete, widespread construction and clogged drains led to the flooding of the streets after heavy rainfall and storm that was experienced on Thursday. The unprecedented rainfall in the city, apart from throwing life out of gear, highlighted the problems that have crept into the drainage system in Chandigarh.

Waterlogging, in fact, has become a perennial problem as after every rain, the drains are not able to handle the flow of water. the surface run-off is high and instead of facilitating recharge of ground water, the water is being wasted.

Commercial and non-commercial plants face a variety of environmental stressors that often cannot be controlled. In this study, transgenic hybrid poplar (Populus × euramericana ‘Guariento’) harboring five effector genes (vgb, SacB, JERF36, BtCry3A and OC-I) were subjected to drought, salinity, waterlogging and insect stressors in greenhouse or laboratory conditions. Field trials were also conducted to investigate long-term effects of transgenic trees on insects and salt tolerance in the transformants.
