The sixth anniversary of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) saw the government promising reforms in the scheme, which has been criticised for delays in wage payments and depleting farm labour.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the scheme could usher in a second green revolution through land development and irrigation facilities. He was, however, silent on demands to extend the scheme to mainstream agricultural activities.

BHUBANESWAR: Jindal Stainless Ltd has been awarded the prestigious Pollution Control Appreciation Award 2011 for excellence in Pollution Control Management in industrial sector. The award has been instituted by Orissa State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB).

It was conferred on Jindal Stainless on the occasion of the 28th Foundation Day function of the Pollution Control Board. Resident Director of JSL Rajdeep Mohanty and GM-cum-Factory Manager Shivarama MS received the award from Forest and Environment Minister Debi Prasad Mishra.

The Assam government has drafted an ambitious plan to introduce cultivation of jatropha (Jatropha curcas ) to help farmers boost their income, and also to produce bio-diesel.

The state agriculture department last week organised a day-long training workshop for farmers and NGOs working in rural areas to popularise the crop.

Jamshedpur, Nov. 18: Dhalbhum divisional forest officer A.T. Mishra has been selected for the prestigious Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra (IPVM) award, the highest honour in the field of environment in India, for 2010.

Union minister for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh will present the award to Mishra, a 1994 batch IFS (Indian Forest Service) officer, in New Delhi tomorrow.

A forest ecosystem was developed on barren sodic land at Banthra Research Station of National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, during 1960s. About 74 species belonging to 34 families were recorded in this new forest, which was characterized as mixed dry sub-tropical forest with deciduous and evergreen species.
